THE CONCEPT

Hotel Somadevi Angkor Boutique & Resort is a luxury escape nestled in the centre of Siem Reap, where everything is within convenient walking distance.

Best of all, it's a tranquil oasis where you can relax by the pool with a few nibbles.

THE SETTING

The hotel is situated right in the centre of Siem Reap.

The main street - Pub Street - is just a 10-minute walk, and there are two large supermarkets within 5 minutes walking.

Tropical plants line the centre area of the resort to give a real oasis-like feel, and huge goldfish bubble away in a pool next to the restaurant and bar areas.

Outside the hotel you'll find fruit and vegetable markets, and the hotel has an excellent on-site cafe if you're after a quick coffee.

The UNESCO World Heritage rated Angkor Ruins, including the infamous Angkor Wat, is just 7km from the hotel.

THE ROOMS

The resort's spacious and light-filled rooms either overlook the pool area or the gardens. Each room also has a large day-bed couch for relaxing, and a huge luxurious bathroom.

There's also international power outlets, so you won't need to use your adapter.

Each room comes with bathrobes, slippers, safe, iron and iron board, hair dryer and all bathroom amenities

THE ACTIVITIES

Aloe Spa is onsite, where you can get an incredible treatment just a few steps from your room. Prices start from $28usd for a 30-minute back massage to $80usd for a 2 hours, two-hands massage. They also have regular specials - make sure you check them out.

You can also take a poolside Khmer cooking class. Prices start $25usd per person and include recipes to take home with you, fresh coconuts for drinking and a full chef's outfit to keep you clean. You'll create fresh salads, traditional Khmer soup, lobster or fish curry and sticky rice desserts.

The resort can organise tours of the Angkor Ruins, which should be top of your list of things to do in Siem Reap.

THE FOOD

The Champagne Fine Dining Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the following times:

Breakfast: 0600-1000 (open nice and early to get touring the Angkor Ruins before the crowds arrive)

Lunch: 1130-1400

Dinner: 1800-2200

Breakfast is served as a buffet with a big selection of hot meals that change daily, a salad bar, 3 fruit options and an egg and noodle soup stations.

The Palm Coffee House is a cute on-site cafe which serves cakes, coffees, teas etc from 0800-2200. It sits in front of the resort and is the perfect place to relax or catch up on a bit of work.

The White Lounge is where you'll enjoy your welcome drink and is the hotel's bar, open from 1130-2200.

The Blue Pool Bar is what the name suggests - order anything from homestyle french fries to Japanese pork Tonkatsu and enjoy your snack in a lounger, after a refreshing dip in the pool.

THE SERVICE

The staff are some of the warmest people you will meet in Cambodia, greeting you (often by name) as you enter and exit the resort.

All guests are provided a few welcome treats - ours included:

25% off food and beverages

A free 10-minute foot reflexology at Aloe Spa

A voucher entitling us to $20 for a 1 hour treatment in the on-site Aloe Spa

Our room was cleaned twice a day and sprayed with mosquito repellant to keep any mosquitos away.

We were treated to a 60-minute aromatherapy massage each, and the therapists were really well trained. It's definitely worth spending the extra money to get a proper massage, as opposed to the ones offered on the streets where untrained massage therapists push and prod you with no idea what they are doing.

A nice touch at Aloe Spa is you that can choose from a variety of scented oils to be massaged with, or just go with good old virgin coconut oil.

INSIDER TIPS

  • You can have as much complimentary tea and coffee as you'd like - you just need to request it.

  • Internet works really quick for Cambodian standards: download 29mp/s and upload was 22mp/s during our stay. If that doesn't make sense, don't worry - it just means it's quick.

  • Amenities such as toothbrush, comb, shower gel and shampoo were provided

  • Power outlets were multi-outlet, so you won't need your adaptor

  • The hotel has a saltwater swimming pool, seperate sauna and steam rooms for men and ladies, and a huge hot tub! This is available to all guests free of charge.

  • There's also a 24-hour business centre, 24-hour room service and a 24-hour on-call doctor service
